Fabricating Manufactured Wire Reefs (MWRs)

Come out and help cut, bend, and connect galvanized wire to form multiple MWR structures using both manual and power tools. Recycled oyster shells and coconut husk fiber will be added to the structure attracting young oyster spat on the large surface area of the structures. No prior experience necessary! MWR fabrication events are in collaboration with our friends at DNR’s South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement (SCORE) Program at our office in North Charleston.

Building an Oyster Reef

Come on out, the water’s fine! During low tide, volunteers will move shell bags/MWRs, to the intertidal site where the reefs will be located. The build looks a little different for each site and may involve use of small boats, trailers, and human volunteer chains to move the substrate. Oyster reefs are only constructed during the summer months, when young, free-swimming oysters are available to recruit on the recycled oyster shell substrates. No prior experience necessary!

Community Litter Sweeps

Volunteers will be picking up litter around the Charleston area. Each location is a little bit different and can be along the road, the beach and even in the marsh. Let’s work together to help prevent microplastics and other pollutants from ending up in our water ways. All litter data will be tracked using the South Carolina Aquarium’s Citizen Science App: Litter Journal.
