MLK Day of Service Litter Sweep Event

Join us, Keep Charleston Beautiful, and Adopt-A-Highway for our annual MLK Day of Service Litter Sweep. This isn’t just about picking up litter; it’s about picking up our community. It’s about coming together as neighbors, honoring a legacy of service, and showing some serious love to the Lowcountry. It’s a fun, rewarding way to give back to the community and protect our local environment. Supplies are provided, and all ages are welcome. Let’s make a visible difference together!

Fabricating Manufactured Wire Reefs (MWRs)

Come out and help cut, bend, and connect galvanized wire to form multiple MWR structures using both manual and power tools. Recycled oyster shells and coconut husk fiber will be added to the structure attracting young oyster spat on the large surface area of the structures. No prior experience necessary! MWR fabrication events are in collaboration with our friends at DNR’s South Carolina Oyster Restoration and Enhancement (SCORE) Program at our office in North Charleston.

Building an Oyster Reef

Get muddy for the marsh! Join us for a hands-on conservation day building oyster reefs in the beautiful South Carolina Lowcountry. This is your chance to directly contribute to the health and resilience of our coastal environment. You’ll be instrumental in the construction, which involves moving and placing heavy materials directly into the marsh. We use various methods, including carrying bags of oyster shell, positioning manufactured wire reefs, and setting pre-formed cement oyster castles. No experience is necessary, just a can-do attitude, a willingness to get dirty, and a desire to make a real, tangible difference. Let’s make some waves (and some reefs) together!
