FAQs

What is weatherization?

Weatherization involves improving your home’s energy efficiency to protect it from the elements and reduce energy loss. This can include a variety of improvements designed to keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, while also lowering your utility bills.

What are the benefits of the Energy Assistance Program?

Lower Energy Bills: By making your home more energy-efficient, weatherization helps reduce the amount of energy needed for heating and cooling, leading to significant savings on your utility costs.

Increased Home Comfort: Sealing drafts and improving insulation can eliminate cold spots and maintain more consistent temperatures throughout your home, making it a more comfortable living space.

Improved Health and Safety: Weatherization can address health and safety issues such as poor indoor air quality, mold, and carbon monoxide risks, contributing to a healthier home environment.

Increased Home Durability: Some weatherization measures can help protect your home from moisture damage and other environmental factors.

What are typical weatherization services?

Common services include:

  • Installing insulation in attics, walls, and floors.
  • Sealing air leaks around windows, doors, and other areas.
  • Repairing or replacing inefficient heating and cooling systems.
  • Improving ventilation to ensure good indoor air quality.
  • Installing energy-efficient lighting.
  • Addressing minor health and safety issues related to energy efficiency.

What is air sealing and why is it important?

Air sealing is the process of finding and blocking leaks in your home’s envelope (walls, ceilings, floors). It’s crucial because uncontrolled air leakage can account for a significant portion of a home’s heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, making your HVAC system work harder.

How do I know if my home needs weatherization or energy efficiency upgrades?

Common signs include:

  • High energy bills
  • Drafts near windows, doors, or outlets
  • Uneven temperatures between rooms
  • Cold floors in winter, hot rooms in summer
  • Presence of mold or mildew
