Energy Assistance Program for Santee Cooper Customers

Reduce Your Energy Bills with Free Weatherization Services

Through the Energy Assistance Program, The Sustainability Institute provides free weatherization services to help eligible homeowners in Berkeley, Georgetown, and Horry County reduce their energy costs and improve home comfort.

This initiative is funded by a portion of the unclaimed settlement funds from the 2021 class action lawsuit, Hearn v. Santee Cooper. Our goal is to decrease energy insecurity by providing energy efficiency upgrades that can reduce annual energy bills by 10% to over 30%.

Program Services

The program begins with a comprehensive home energy audit to identify the best ways to save energy for your specific home. Based on this audit, services may include:

  • Weatherization Upgrades: Air sealing, insulation, and other efficiency improvements.
  • Advanced Repairs: Extensive home performance upgrades or HVAC replacement for qualifying households.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for these no-cost services, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Utility Provider: Must be a Santee Cooper customer.

  • Occupancy: You must live in an owner-occupied home.

  • Low-Income Status: Generally determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as a household earning 80% or less of the Area Median Income (AMI), adjusted for family size.
