Weatherization & Critical Home Repair: Strengthening Homes, Lowering Bills

The Hidden Crisis: Why Weatherization Matters in South Carolina
In South Carolina, many families face a "silent crisis" of energy insecurity. Despite our state having relatively low energy rates, residents often experience some of the highest energy burdens in the nation. This is because many Lowcountry homes suffer from aging infrastructure, insufficient insulation, and outdated heating systems.
When a home isn't "weatherized," it leaks expensive cooled air in the summer and heat in the winter. For many low-income families, this means spending up to 45% of their monthly income just to keep the lights on—often forcing a heartbreaking choice between paying the utility bill or buying groceries and medicine.
Our Program Overview: A Holistic "Whole House" Approach
The Sustainability Institute doesn’t just patch symptoms; we fix the root cause. Our Weatherization and Critical Home Repair Department provides no-cost services to help homeowners improve efficiency, lower utility costs, and enhance safety.
We use a "whole-house" strategy. This means we look at the home as a single system—addressing structural issues like leaky roofs or failing floors that would otherwise prevent a home from being eligible for energy upgrades. By combining critical repairs with weatherization, we ensure your home is healthy, safe, and affordable for the long term.

Who We Help: Empowering Our Neighbors
Our programs are specifically designed to support low-income homeowners who are struggling with high energy costs. We prioritize those who need it most, including:
Seniors (62+) and individuals with disabilities.
Families with children under the age of 18.
High Energy Burden Households who spend a disproportionate amount of their income on utilities.
To be eligible, you must own and occupy your home as your primary residence and meet specific household income limits (typically based on HUD or federal poverty guidelines).
